RECOMMENDATIONS FOR WORKING WITH THE TIG OR ARGON PROCESS.

admin June 16, 2026 2 min 0

The following recommendations will help make welding projects using the TIG or ARGON process more effective and efficient.

  • Do not use argon mixed with carbon dioxide as a shielding gas. CO2 is an active gas and will destroy the tungsten electrode.
  • Keep in mind that this is an electric arc process that generates metallic fumes and radiation; therefore, the use of personal protective equipment is mandatory to perform applications safely.
  • It is essential that the equipment is in excellent condition (cables free of splices, connectors in good condition, and the equipment must have up-to-date inspections).
  • Welding rays can cause burns to the eyes and skin; ideally, all parts exposed to radiation should be protected with items such as a welding helmet with a protective filter shade, which will help prevent various types of conditions that may arise.
  • Wear protective clothing to cover all exposed parts of the body that could be affected by sparks, hot spatter, and radiation. Refer to standard ANSI Z49.1.
  • Use dry leather gloves before turning on the welding machine, as wet gloves may result in electric shock.
  • Do not weld on containers that have stored flammable materials, or on cans, drums, or tanks until proper safety measures have been taken to prevent explosions.
  • It is recommended to use hearing protection for equipment operating at high frequency in the TIG process. The high frequency generates a very loud noise that can interfere with welding operations.
