# WHAT IS LASER WELDING? Laser welding is a high-precision fusion welding process that uses a concentrated laser beam as a heat source to join metallic or thermoplastic materials. The term “LASER” stands for **Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation**. ## Operating Principle The laser beam is focused onto the workpiece surface through optical lenses or fiber optics, generating an extremely high energy density that rapidly melts the base metal at the joint area. Upon cooling, a narrow, deep weld bead is formed with a high depth-to-width ratio, known as the **aspect ratio**. ## Main Types of Laser Welding – **Conduction mode welding:** The laser beam heats the surface without vaporizing the material, producing shallow, wide weld beads. – **Keyhole mode welding (deep penetration):** The energy density is high enough to vaporize the metal, creating a vapor capillary or **keyhole** surrounded by molten metal. ## Advantages – Minimal heat-affected zone **(HAZ)** – Low thermal distortion – High welding
