Tungsten electrodes are a very important element in the TIG welding process, also commonly known as argon welding. All electrodes have different alloying elements that help generate good electrical conductivity in order to produce a stable welding arc. The welding surgeon must know the type of base material to be welded and, based on that, choose the ideal electrode to perform the application properly.
Myths and facts about Thorium-alloyed electrodes.
Thorium is a radioactive material that can present health and environmental risks at elevated exposure levels. The use of these electrodes is exempt from Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations. However, as of August 27, 2014, electrode manufacturers and importers must hold a specific NRC license to distribute these electrodes. The license will impose requirements for labeling, quality control, reporting, maintenance, and oversight. All persons shipping thoriated tungsten electrodes to the United States must comply with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. The DOT requires that thoriated tungsten electrodes be properly packaged and labeled. The surface of the package must be monitored for radioactivity. For example, the U.S. Postal Service requires the following label on the address side of the package: “This package must comply with the conditions and limitations specified in 49 CFR 173.426 for radioactive material, excepted package — articles manufactured from natural uranium (or natural thorium).”
Thorium is a low-level radioactive material that also emits primarily alpha particles along with some beta and gamma radiation. These electrodes are normally ground as part of the standard procedure when preparing to perform Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW). Particles from this material that may be released during the grinding process can cause various illnesses, including cancer. If the dust is accidentally ingested or inhaled, it is essential to undergo a medical examination and frequent check-ups, as these illnesses may develop over the years. Although the risk of internal exposure during welding is negligible in most circumstances, it is important to follow occupational health and safety recommendations.
