# WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF WELDING HELMETS? The history of welding helmets is closely tied to the development of welding processes themselves, particularly arc welding, which emerged in the late 19th century. ## Early Beginnings (Late 1800s) When Auguste de Méritens and later Nikolai Benardos and Stanisław Olszewski pioneered arc welding in the 1880s, workers had virtually no eye or face protection. The intense ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) radiation emitted by the electric arc caused severe eye injuries known as **arc eye** or **photokeratitis**, as well as burns to exposed skin. ## First Protective Measures (Early 1900s) The earliest forms of eye protection consisted of simple **tinted glass lenses** held in hand-held frames, similar to the goggles used by glassblowers and foundry workers.
